Glasgow Distilled: March 2019
GLASGOW COMEDY FESTIVAL
Thu 14-Sun 31 Mar
Welcoming acts from all corners of the globe and celebrating the best local humorists, the Glasgow Comedy Festival is undoubtedly a highlight of the calendar year in the west. This year’s edition features, as always, some impressive names; Limmy, Tony Law, Russell Kane, Elaine C Smith and Al Murray are all bringing their best patter to the city’s pub, theatres and comedy clubs. Of course, we’re all about the local talent. Larry Dean has a victory lap of sorts for his Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated Bampot, an anecdotal whirlwind that packs an emotional punch, on Thu 14 Mar; the smartly-attired and delightfully foul-mouthed Amelia Bayler brings her Emotional Bangers to The State the following night; and the rapid ascent of the hilarious Christopher MacArthur-Boyd is set to continue - he’ll perform his acclaimed Home Sweet Home at The Stand on Sat 30 Mar. That same hallowed basement on Woodlands Road will also host a brand new hour from Ashley Storrie; she’ll get Hysterical on Thu 21 Mar. No shortage of excuses to get out of the house!
Thu 14-Sun 31 Mar
Glasgow’s festival of all things literary, Aye Write, has grown from humble beginnings into a veritable feast of talk and discussion. Based in the stunning Mitchell Library - one of the city’s most impressive feats of architecture - this year’s programme is an eclectic triumph. Highlights include the legendary local artist Frank Quietly’s The Comics That Made Me, where he’ll talk about his journey through the industry, from his childhood in Rutherglen to his work on New X-Men, All Star Superman and Batman and Robin; novelists David Keenan and Michael Hughes’ discussion on the fictional depictions of The Troubles in Northern Ireland; and Viv Albertine’s To Throw Away Unopened, where The Slits’ iconic singer will talk about her latest memoir with characteristic honestly and fearlessness. Darren ‘Loki’ McGarvey, Frank Turner, Val McDermid and Masterchef winner Gary MacLean are amongst the big names taking part. Something for everyone? You bet.
The Hug and Pint, Fri 8 Mar
Benedict Salter and Kitty Hall make haunting pop gems that are inspired as much by celtic traditions and folk music as they are cutting edge modern pop production. That juxtaposition runs though everything Kelora do; futuristic synths intertwine with meandering harpsichord, and a love of Scottish culture and history is offset with lyrics that express fear of an uncertain future. The joyous ‘All I Want Is You’ from last year’s Calpol EP is a standout cut, as is the foreboding ‘999’ from 2017. Support on the night comes from Arm Watches Fingers.
O2 Academy, Mon 18 Mar
Yes Lawd! One of the most anticipated Glasgow gigs in recent times comes from Anderson Paak; you know - him with the beautiful smile, sunny disposition and unbelievable musical chops? The Dr Dre collaborator turned breakout solo artist now set on, if not world domination, enriching each and every life his funk fused hip-hop enters. In case you hadn’t clicked, we’re excited about this one. Last year’s Oxnard was another stunner (with one of the best tracks of the year in the Kendrick Lamar starring, instant classic ‘Tints’), and another full-length album, Ventura, is on the way soon. Never accuse our Andy of slacking off.
